Abstract: Fuel synthesis was established based on the results of the corresponding process analyses and the resources of the Fuel Processing department, and developed using initial promising approaches and research findings. R&D efforts will continue to focus on resource- and energysavingconversion pathways for e-fuels. In particular, the synthesis of higher alcohols such as isobutanol and octanol using Ni/Pt catalysts fabricated at IEK-14 were the focus of current developments. The reactors developed as part of fuel processing were successfully transferredto projects for the synthesis of alternative energy carriers. Three catalytic burners are used by an industrial partner as residual gas burners in a plant for DME synthesis, and have proven their efficiency by achieving the exhaust gas regulations according to the TechnicalInstructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft). A newly designed reactor arrangement for the water-gas shift reaction significantly reduces the amount of carbon monoxide in a pyrolysis gas so that a subsequent biological methanation can produce synthetic natural gas. Hydrogensafety is a logical addition to the R&D portfolio at IEK-14, and is developing towards the provision of safety concepts and equipment for any H2 applications. An initial non-nuclear project addresses the safe transport of liquid H2 by coastal vessels. The objectives of both the “Materials and Technologies for the Energy Transition (MTET)” Helmholtz program and the funding programs focusing on the energy transition and structural change in the Rhineland region, to which IEK-14 has made a substantial contribution, have enabled IEK-14 to focus on hydrogen in its technology research and development, and thus on a climate-neutral energy supply.
